Banks

Banks are open from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. Some banks in Lisbon and in tourist resorts close at 7.00 p.m. They all close at weekends and on national holidays. ATM machines for use with debit cards are widely available, including at UTL Schools (you often find several machines in the same street), and credit cards are also common. The ATM machines work 24 hours a day and are commonly known as Multibanco; you can use your card to withdraw money or pay for services. Check with your bank for details on debt and credit cards that can be used in Portugal. 

Pharmacies

Pharmacies are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings. There are also 24-hour pharmacies that operate according to an official notice displayed in pharmacy windows.

Post Offices

Post Offices are open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Some close at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays postal facilities are available in the Lojas do Cidadão (Citizens’ Shops) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Telecommunications

Public telephones, operated by Portugal Telecom (PT) or Marconi, can be found at airports, seaports, and railway stations, and in streets, bars and restaurants. There are two types of phones that you are likely to come across: coin and card operated.

To call Portugal from abroad, the international dialling code is 00-351.

Phones (Cellular phones)

If you already have a mobile phone, you can use a global roaming on a mobile phone from your country or buy a “pre-paid SIM card” for around 10 €, or set up an account.

Student Cards

The Cartão Jovem (EURO <26 Youth Card) gives discounts, price reductions, and exemptions on various services, including the zoo, cinemas, and transport. It can be obtained at Pousadas da Juventude (youth hostels), Movijovem Shops and Regional Delegations of the Instituto Português da Juventude (Portuguese Youth Institute), and at the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD Bank) and at Post Offices. Those aged 12 to 25 years are eligible and the card costs 8 € and is valid for one year. You need to provide a photograph and show your ID or passport. Your Youth Card is delivered immediately upon reception of the documents.
