Research and education are closely intertwined in the Technical University of Lisbon, where research completes and supports the educational mission by creating up-to-date kowledge and adding a global dimension to the educational process.

All of UTL’s Schools are strongly involved in applied research projects, in technological development and innovation, and in fundamental research. Most research takes place within Research Centres and Institutes, accredited in the national science system (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), and have critical mass and material resources for  sustainable development in the various fields of their research programmes. Several of these units are research references in the scientific community and have international recognition.

The potential for interdisciplinary research at UTL has been increasingly explored in the development of new areas of research and new professional post-graduate training. UTL and their professors and researchers have played a key role in defining strategies and research policies at national level and in some cases European-wide.

Many of the research projects are multidisciplinary and have an international dimension, particularly at European level. Links with various economic and industrial sectors are established, both nationally and in Europe, and partnerships are operational. Increasing the capacity to transform the results of research and scientific and technological developments into economic and industrial achievements is a strategic goal of UTL.
